I was hooked from the moment I opened Thorns & Fire, the second installment in the Ashes of Thezmarr series by Rebecca Crunden. Since finishing the first book, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of Wren and Torj, knowing that their dynamic would only deepen and grow more intense. Little did I know, Crunden would deliver a rich tapestry of love, loss, and the struggles of healing that would keep me riveted until the last page.
At the heart of this book is Wren, a fiercely resourceful and pragmatic female character who embodies a complex blend of strength and vulnerability. I admired her journey as she navigates her PTSD and grief; it’s refreshing to see a strong female lead who doesn’t just embody physical prowess but also uses her mind and magic as weapons. Wren’s determination to heal and take charge of her life resonated deeply with me. Her mantra of “I’m his to protect, and he’s mine” illustrates not only her loyalty but also the beautifully intertwined destinies of Wren and Torj.
Speaking of Torj—oh, Torj! This swoon-worthy warrior absolutely lives up to the hype. Crunden has crafted him with layers of complexity; his insecurities and protective nature make him relatable and endearing. I loved how his desire to shield Wren could lead to misunderstandings, presenting a realistic portrayal of relationships. Moments like, “All I want is a life with you, Embers,” hit hard, tapping into that universal longing we all have for love amidst chaos. It’s hard not to root for these two as they grapple with their feelings while trying to save not just themselves, but their entire world.
One of the standout elements of Crunden’s writing is her ability to balance character-driven moments with plot development. This book leans more towards introspection and political machinations compared to its predecessor, but it makes each moment feel significant. The pacing flows beautifully; while the action may be less frequent, the emotional landscape is brimming with tension. Wren and Torj’s chemistry crackles off the page—whether they’re bickering or sharing tender moments, their bond feels genuine. The anticipation builds throughout, especially with lines like, “Do you know what it’s like to want someone so badly you can’t breathe?”
