Review of The Last Wish of Bristol Keats by Amber Pearson

As a book blogger, I often find myself swept away by the intricate worlds and relatable characters created by talented authors. Amber Pearson, the mastermind behind The Last Wish of Bristol Keats, has captivated my reader’s heart with her enchanting storytelling since the first installment in this duology. This sequel has been one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and I dove in with eager anticipation. With a solid 4.5 stars rounded up to 5, I found myself completely enthralled, even if the ending left me craving just a bit more.

Picking up right where The Courting of Bristol Keats left off, this installment plunges us back into the rich world of Elphame, where Bristol and Tyghan are embroiled in a fierce battle to protect their realm from the clutches of Cormick. Knowing that The Last Wish is not a standalone made me wish I could revisit the previous book; there’s so much depth to the characters and plot that a fresh reading would have enhanced my journey. Thankfully, Pearson seamlessly weaves in crucial elements from the first book, allowing readers like me to reconnect with what makes Bristol, Tyghan, and their world so special.

One of the highlights of this book is its narrative style. The multi-POV third-person perspective adds layers to the story that kept me engaged. Hearing from each character provided a deeper understanding of their motivations and struggles, ultimately enriching the plot. The romance between Bristol and Tyghan is a joy to witness; their fiery relationship holds a mix of sweet and spicy moments that kept me rooting for them. Sure, some may label their antics as juvenile, but I found their love refreshing and relatable—after all, who hasn’t navigated the bumpy roads of young love?

Brittany Pressley’s narration brought the story to life in the best possible way. Her ability to craft distinct voices for each character, paired with her skill in delivering the emotive undertones of the prose, made listening to The Last Wish an absolute delight. With her pacing and emotional resonance, I felt every heartbeat, every betrayal, and every moment of triumph, as if I were right there alongside the characters.

However, I must address a few unresolved elements that left me pondering long after the book ended. A significant betrayal felt surprisingly shallow in its execution, leaving me wanting more depth in that emotional moment. Additionally, the time jump at the end introduced a confusing element regarding the passage of time, which ultimately detracted from an otherwise stellar conclusion. And while I appreciate a tidy wrap-up, the ease with which Bristol and Tyghan reached their happy ending felt a tad too convenient.

Despite these few quibbles, I genuinely savored this enchanting tale. Pearson has a gift for immersing her readers in mesmerizing worlds filled with magic, political intrigue, and a profound sense of found family. For those who adore multi-POV stories with rich romantic arcs and a masterfully constructed fantasy realm, I wholeheartedly recommend picking up this duology. It’s a captivating journey that had me yearning for more—a testament to Pearson’s prowess as a writer. My reading experience was truly uplifting, and I’m excited to see what she dreams up next!
