Unraveling Secrets in Mirage City—A Journey with Andy Mills

One of the joys of delving into the world of historical mysteries is the way they can transport you to another time and place, and Lev A.C. Rosen brilliantly accomplishes this in Mirage City, the fourth installment in the Evander Mills series. From the very first chapter, I was reminded of why I’ve come to adore this series and its protagonist, Andy Mills. The blend of 1950s San Francisco with classic detective and film noir vibes hooks you in, and I was more than ready to join Andy on his latest case.

In this installment, Andy, now a seasoned private investigator, finds himself on a mission to locate three missing members of the Mattachine Society—a groundbreaking and secretive organization advocating for queer rights during a tumultuous time in history. As clues beckon him back to Los Angeles—his hometown and the place where his mom works—readers are treated to a rich tapestry of connection and conflict. While part of me cringed at the thought of Andy leaving behind his found family (who I’ve grown to love), it soon became apparent that this journey was crystal clear in purpose. It wasn’t just about solving a crime but also about self-discovery.

Rosen’s storytelling shines through with his ability to weave an intricate web of tension and suspense. The pacing begins gently, gradually ramping up to a climax filled with surprises and emotional depth. Each twist felt both earned and surprising, akin to a spider spinning its web; the connections among the characters revealed long-held secrets and relationships that felt palpably real and often painfully complicated. I particularly loved how the addition of a motorcycle gang injected a fresh dose of excitement, creating an unpredictable thriller that kept me on my toes.

Andy’s exploration of his life and relationships while dealing with the chaos of the investigation added profound richness to the narrative. His interactions with his mother were particularly poignant, allowing them both to confront ghosts of the past. It’s a reflection of the idea that even amidst turmoil, family ties can offer moments of warmth and clarity. I relished the time spent with his mom—even amid the danger—because it felt absolutely necessary for his character development.

One of the standout aspects of this series—and particularly in Mirage City—is the heartfelt representation of the queer community. Rosen crafts a historical backdrop that represents the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, yet its essence is rooted in hope and resilience. This thoughtful exploration is genuinely refreshing in the adult mystery genre, and it keeps me coming back for more.

Lastly, if you haven’t yet experienced Rosen’s work in audio format, I highly recommend it. Vikas Adam’s narration brings Andy Mills to life in such an authentic way that it’s hard to envision the character without his voice. It’s a beautifully immersive experience that complements Rosen’s lush, noir-style prose.

Overall, Mirage City is not just a captivating mystery; it’s a story about understanding oneself and advocating for others—a quest I believe many can relate to. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys intricately plotted mysteries infused with rich historical context, complex characters, and meaningful representation. I’ve fallen deeper in love with this series, and I can only hope that Rosen continues to create more adventures for Andy Mills.
