Review of Empire of the Dawn (Empire of the Vampire, #3)

There’s something utterly magnetic about diving headfirst into the final installment of a beloved trilogy, especially when that trilogy is penned by the masterful Jay Kristoff. I found myself drawn to Empire of the Dawn as a moth to a flame, knowing all too well that the conclusion of this tale would either ignite my passions or break my heart in ways I couldn’t imagine. Spoiler alert: it did both, and more.

From the very first pages, Kristoff proves he still has tricks up his sleeve. While the pacing may ease up slightly compared to the relentless thrill ride of Empire of the Damned, the tension remains palpable. The dual POV from our “toxic siblings” brings a delicious complexity to the narrative that had me oscillating between dread and anticipation. Honestly, I couldn’t put the book down. It was like being strapped to a rollercoaster whose twists and turns I couldn’t predict—even when I thought I had it all figured out, Kristoff spun it all on its head.

The richness of the characters is where this story truly shines. In particular, the father-daughter dynamic between Gabe and Dior tugged at my cold, dead heart. Watching Gabe’s progression—from the tragic hero to the ‘Best Dad Ever’—was both heartwarming and heart-wrenching. Moments like these balanced the emotional turmoil of the story, reminding us that love, whether familial or romantic, exists even in the darkest of contexts. And oh, the banter! Kristoff’s dark humor and biting sarcasm shine throughout, with Jean-François stealing many scenes with his dry wit and chemistry with Gabe.

One quote, “The Last Silversaint and Last Liathe are serpents, filled with the same rank venom,” encapsulates the beautifully twisted nature of the relationships and rivalries at play. The stakes, once teased through myth and prophecy, felt all too real, heightened by Kristoff’s brilliant use of misdirection and unreliable narration.

The sheer emotional weight of Empire of the Dawn is staggering. From gut-wrenching betrayal to tears caused by the unfolding tragedy, I felt completely unprepared for the onslaught of feelings this book evoked. Each emotional gutpunch seemed to land flawlessly, underscored by breathtaking illustrations that brought the story to life in vivid detail.

And still, despite the overarching darkness, Kristoff brings a glimmer of hope. In Empire of the Dawn, he shows us that even in chaos, the relationships we forge can illuminate our paths forward. The journey leaves you with a poignant reminder: “Everything under the sky is in the process of becoming something else.”
