Review of Immortal by Morning (Argeneau, #37)
There’s something undeniably charming about Lynsay Sands’ ability to blend humor, romance, and mystery within the pages of her beloved Argeneau series. When I saw the title Immortal by Morning, my curiosity piqued—not only because it’s the latest in the series I’ve come to adore, but also due to the premise ensuring a delightful romp through danger, romance, and a dash of comedy. Who could resist an immortal enforcer hunting a decades-old murder while grappling with irresistible chemistry?
The story revolves around Crispinus “Crispin” Delacort, who finds himself completely out of his depth while investigating the discovery of skeletal remains unearthed by an adorable Lab named Lilith. The delightful absurdity of the premise had me chuckling from the very start. Pairing that with Abril Newman, a clever and sassy character who doesn’t shy away from the messiness of life, sets a great tone for this book. Their chemistry is palpable, but the rapid-fire attraction took me by surprise. While there’s a built-in mechanism of insta-lust, Crispin’s suitability as a detective feels compromised by the premature leap toward romance. It’s refreshing to see a heroine maintain her independence, though at times, it felt like there was too much emphasis on Crispin explaining immortal culture. For long-time fans of the series, this might feel redundant.
Sands expertly weaves humor throughout, creating an endearing family dynamic that echoes back to the series’ roots. Comfort reads often thrive on familiar relationships, and seeing the quirks of Crispin’s world unfold felt like a warm hug. However, pacing did become an issue; the narrative occasionally lagged, especially during those moments when the stakes were supposed to be high. Once the danger escalated, the plot finally found its groove.
One aspect that stood out was the writing style. While Sands is known for her engaging prose, I found that in parts, particularly with overused transitional phrases, the dialogue felt stiff. The villain’s monologuing came off as almost laughable, echoing classic cartoonish tropes. In those moments, I found myself wishing for a more streamlined narrative that truly showcased the vivid characters; I could hear Lucian’s sarcastic remarks cutting through the fluff effortlessly!
Overall, is Immortal by Morning groundbreaking? Not exactly. However, it remains an enjoyable addition to the Argeneau series—a delightful mix of paranormal romance and a murder mystery that keeps the gears turning. If you’re a long-time reader, you won’t want to miss this one. Newcomers, while you might be slightly bewildered by the rapid immersion into immortal lore here, you’ll likely still find enough charm to spark interest in exploring the series further.
As I turned the last page, I came away with a reminder of why I dive into Sands’ works. They provide a lighthearted escape, one that leaves both a smile on my face and perhaps a chuckle lingering in my heart. If you’re on the lookout for a quick, fun read filled with humor and a dash of romance, Immortal by Morning is worth adding to your TBR list.
